The beginning of a new school year always lends itself for the opportunity to become more organized. I'm sure you start out just like me. Organized as all get out. And you have EVERY intention of staying that way for the remainder of the year. You even tell all of your co-workers that, "I'm going to be SOOOOOOO organized this year, m'kay?!" And they notsosecretly roll their eyes and pat you on the head saying something along the lines of "sure you are, sweetie." I swear. Every year. I.WILL.BE.MORE.ORGANIZED. And I am. For the first week....BEFORE the kids get there :) Then all bets are … [Read more...] about Cr:e:ate to Organize

Number Sense & a Freebie!
One of the best things we can do for our little friends at the beginning of the year is set a strong foundation in numeracy & number sense. If y'all have been reading this blog for 5 minutes, you might already know that I absolutely LOVE teaching math. BIG love it. Which is funny considering I still call my mom when I'm trying to figure out how much money I'm going to save when there's a sale. I can figure out 50% off like a champ....and if there's anything more than that I know I'm winning...but start throwing in 15%, 20%, 30%, etc. and well...let's just say there's a reason the primary grades are my wheelhouse :) … [Read more...] about Number Sense & a Freebie!
Personal Vocabulary Books ~ A Freebie!
Yesterday I showed y'all a fun little vocabulary activity we do in our classroom before/during/after reading. I thought we'd continue with a little vocabulary fun today so that I can show y'all one of my favorite little resources...our Vocabulary Mini Books!!! This was a class favorite this past year! Since we're in Kindergarten, we started off with a GIANT version of this book. Basically, we copied these pages on chart paper and did this activity whole group. I would use these books for one word and then complete 1-2 pages per day. I felt like this helped us to stay on task and really dig deep into word … [Read more...] about Personal Vocabulary Books ~ A Freebie!
Vocabulary Can Be Fun, Too!
Hello friends. My name is Cara and I'm a WORD NERD. I love words. Everything about them. I pore over them. I **try** and make myself more interesting by using those "fun" words in random conversation. Words are FUN. Entertaining. Convivial. Delightful. Enjoyable. Fill in the blank here :) I want my kids to love words as much as I do. I want to hear them using "big" words in their everyday conversations. Not that I expect my kids to use insanely challenging vocabulary all the time, but there's no reason they can't "speak smart"! Last year one of my goals was to … [Read more...] about Vocabulary Can Be Fun, Too!

Sight Wordle – Simple Sight Word Center
Now that we've talked all about the Writing Center, let's move on over to one of my other favorites...the Sight Word Center. Do you have a sight word center in your room? I LOVE mine. A special little center dedicated to nothing but sight words. This center is filled with TONS of options for the kids. Playdoh & letter stamps, sight word rings & cards, games, sight word books....the list goes on. I try not to keep out the same choices any longer than 2-3 weeks because, again, the novelty wears off. I'll always bring back activities at different times of the year, but I like to change it up … [Read more...] about Sight Wordle – Simple Sight Word Center
Work on Writing – A Writing Center Makeover
How many of y'all struggle with your writing center? I know I do. Every year. I want my kids to be engaged and excited about every part of the writing process. I want them to LOVE to write. I want them to CHOOSE to write when they have free time. This is not always the case for every child, but I'm DETERMINED that it will be!!! Writing is a HUGE part of our day. We write for EVERYTHING. We have about 30-45 minutes for Writers Workshop...then there's Shared Writing...and of course the Writing Center. And we're writing in all other academic areas as well. You'd think it's easy to … [Read more...] about Work on Writing – A Writing Center Makeover
Apples & Freebies!
Not really sure what it is about apples that I love so much, but dang. I DO. I love them. I'll take them anyway I can get them. I'm kinda like Bubba in Forrest Gump, but instead of being obsessed with shrimp, I'm obsessed with apples. I even have a board dedicated to them... Today we're celebrating July birthdays in the family. Mine included. You know what that means?! All the apple pie I can handle. GET.OUT.RIGHT.NOW!!!!!! So that got me to thinking about apples in the classroom. A thematic staple of mine for the last 13 … [Read more...] about Apples & Freebies!
Summer Fun…Math Style!
I have to say that I've been blessed with two kids who LOVE to learn. Trust me when I say that I know this isn't always the case so I am very grateful that {at this moment in time} they love it. My wish is NOT for them to be at the top of their class{es}, read the best, or anything like that, rather I want them to LOVE school and LOVE to learn. And so far, thankyouJesus, they do. As you can imagine with two little boys who love to learn, we haven't been sitting idly at home doing a whole lotta nothing. Yes...there are MORE video game moments than I can count....the pool has been their second home....and our … [Read more...] about Summer Fun…Math Style!
The Last 22 Days {In Pictures}
I've been spending the last couple of days recuperating. It's been a loooooooong month. In the best way possible. Around the end of June, we drove 19ish hours to Indiana and stayed a few days with our family. A few days after we got there, I drove a couple of hours to meet up with some of my favorite friends for our annual (6 hour) lunch. (left to right... Amanda from One Extra Degree, Michelle from Fabulous in First, and Abby and Faith from The Inspired Apple} A few days after that, we all hopped back in the Kia and headed north to Michigan...another 3ish hours...and stayed a few days … [Read more...] about The Last 22 Days {In Pictures}
If You’re Going to Read Something, Read THIS! {Crash Course}
If I'm being totally honest, I'm not much of a reader. I mean, I LOVE to read. I do. But I don't have time to read very often. I'd call myself more of a skimmer. When summer rolls around, all bets are off. I literally pore over books like it's nobody's business and try to fit a year's worth of reading into 2 months. Especially on our road trips. When you're sitting in a car for 13+ hours, you need a little something constructive to occupy your time :) All that to be said, I did read ONE book during the school year. One of the BEST books I've ever read. And I'm not just saying that. … [Read more...] about If You’re Going to Read Something, Read THIS! {Crash Course}
Christmas in July!
Hey y'all! Have you enjoyed watching the tumbleweeds that have been rolling across this blog for the last couple of weeks?! I've been out of town now for 19 days. NINETEEN. That's just about 12 days away from a month. Y'all. That's a LOOOOOONG time...in case you weren't already aware :) I'm DYING to tell you all about my adventures in Vegas, but I'm not home just yet. In the meantime, I'm joining my sweet friends over at Blog Hoppin' to bring you a little Christmas in July. I mean, Hobby Lobby has already started decorating their aisles, so we might as well celebrate in … [Read more...] about Christmas in July!

Ready, Aim, FIRE!
I don't know if I told y'all this already, but we're currently visiting family in Indiana. It's shaping up to be quite the whirlwind trip. We always drive. Every year. And I love it. I do. I LOVE road trips. SO much to see! And y'all...'Merica is beautiful. Anyway, our road trip driving up lasts 2 days. It's a total of 18-19 hours for us to get here and we have to break it up into two days because, well, that's just a long time to be in the car...especially for my VERY busy little boys. We'll be here for a few more days before heading to Michigan. While we're here in Indiana, … [Read more...] about Ready, Aim, FIRE!
I Notebook…Do You?
Do you notebook?? {Is it okay that I just made that a verb??} Well...all that to be said, I DO. I notebook. There. I said it. I notebook and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I started out small this past year. Dabbled in it, if you will. I used Deanna's Interactive Reading Journals and they worked out beautifully. I got my feet wet and I LOVED it. I wanted to incorporate more interactive notebooking because I saw how much my kids LOVED it...and how engaged they were...and how they seemed to retain SO much more and make SO many connections while learning. Not gonna lie...it was awesome. … [Read more...] about I Notebook…Do You?
Starting With the End in Mind – End of Year Portfolios
Starting with the end in mind. That pretty much sums up my approach to teaching. When you know where you need to go, you plan your journey to make sure you end up at that destination. I guess I take that same approach with everything though. End of year portfolios included :) If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me post a little teaser pic of my EOY portfolios. Several of y'all asked that I blog about what's included, so here we go! Here's what my portfolios look like when I send them home with the kids. These portfolios aren't to be confused with the ongoing portfolios that follow … [Read more...] about Starting With the End in Mind – End of Year Portfolios
Hiatus. Oh, and Happy Summer!
Every now and then, I think it's important to take a break from blogging. In my case, LOTS of breaks :) And in the famous words of Ferris Bueller.... SO true, Ferris. So true. And it was just the break I needed to recharge. From a LONG year. A year full of more surprises than I thought were possible. Good surprises. Unexpected changes. Let me just tell y'all this...God is SO good. All.the.time. The day after the school year ended, Mr. Spouse and I dropped the kids off at mom & dad's and headed to the Bahamas to spend a week in paradise. We're … [Read more...] about Hiatus. Ice Cream, Graduation, & Summer’s Almost Here!
Right after end of year testing, we gear up for graduation. Seeing their sweet little faces topped with graduation caps is almost too much. Especially when it's your own child. This happened today.... He graduated from Kindergarten. I cried. A lot. I love that kid. And to think about everything he's accomplished this year academically, socially, emotionally...well, darn. It makes me one proud and overwhelmed momma! We were blessed with such a GREAT year...for both my boys. But the year's not over yet. 8 more days. But who's counting?!?!? Speaking of graduation, … [Read more...] about Ice Cream, Graduation, & Summer’s Almost Here!
Truckin’ Along
Hello friends. Are you still there?? I am. Barely. We are knee deep in testing and assessments and that is consuming my life right now. 2 more days. TWO.MORE.DAYS. We have 15...{ahem}...14!!! more days of school left. The countdown is on. It's been on. In fact, I'm pretty sure the kids abandoned their countdown because they're already acting like they're on summer break. Y'all know what I'm talkin' about. I wish I had a fun update to share. Something exciting. Something interesting. But I've got NOTHIN'. Nada. Zip. Zilch. But I will be back soon because we have SO much fun planned. If … [Read more...] about Truckin’ Along
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!!
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!! One of my non-teaching friends posted this on Facebook today and it made me laugh out loud... Hahaha!! It's definitely a calling! Speaking of teacher appreciation, I'm pretty much surviving this week thanks to all of my Pinterest finds. I have 4 teachers to buy for and there is SO many great ideas out there on ways to show your teachers you appreciate them without breaking the bank. Here's what we've done so far... Speaking of random {were we speaking about random?!?!}...I got the most AMAZING package full of goodies delivered to my doorstep yesterday and I … [Read more...] about Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!!
