I can’t really say we love “winter” here in Texas…specifically, south Texas. There’s not much winter here to speak of. We have a few cold snaps here and there, but at this very moment, my 5-year-old is chasing our new dog outside…in his shorts…and nothing else ;) Now that’s MY kind of winter!!!!!! We’re bringing as much winter as we can to the classroom and we started our first week back after break with some snowman related activities. We definitely kept ourselves busy and had SNOW much fun in the process {sorry…I couldn’t help myself ;)} I loved teaching symmetry this time of year. I introduced Mr. … [Read more...] about Make SNOW Mistake About It…We LOVE Winter!

Extra! Extra!
HAPPY NEW YEAR, sweet friends!!!! I took a little blogging hiatus during the break so that I could just ENJOY my sweet little family…and ohmiword…it was AMAZING!!! Hope your new year is off to a great start!!! I think one of my favorite times of the day has become “Daily Dish”. You might know this better as ‘daily news’ or ‘morning meeting’. As the year progresses, I like this time even more. I just wanted to share with y’all a little something we’ve been doing during this little block of time to reinforce phonemic awareness and writing. About 2-3 days a week, I choose the topic for our … [Read more...] about Extra! Extra!

The Holidays In Rewind.
I don’t know if it’s just me that feels like time is passing by at warp speed, but this past semester has been INSANE. I feel like I blinked and it was over. Anyway, since I was TERRIBLE about posting this month, I thought I’d do a quick catch-up…the month in rewind :) Enjoy! We celebrated Dozen Day on 12-12-12 {aka: “Doomsday”…ha!} I used my little anchor chart to have the kids fill in the numbers {up to 12} on a number line and we brainstormed things that come in 12 as well as different ways to show 12, too! FUN! We were knee deep in all things “twelve” that day and the kids had a blast. At … [Read more...] about The Holidays In Rewind.
Blessed.
Like most days, today I’m feeling blessed. Really, REALLY blessed. Not only am I a mommy to two precious, precious boys, but I’m also a school mommy to 19 precious little souls. Little babies who wake up each day and come to school with an innate faith that they will be cared for and loved. Precious little people whose biggest problems are playground woes, runny noses, untied shoes, and lost jackets. Innocent little loves who are BEYOND thrilled to see my reaction when they draw me a picture, pick me a flower, or tell me that they love me. So very, very innocent. As a mommy to my own two littles, I wake up everyday … [Read more...] about Blessed.

Math Fun, Grinch Prep, Gingerbread, and I Got My Shop On :)
Does it seem like this year is moving in fast forward and you can’t find the pause button?! Ummm…hello, Christmas?!?!?!? ALREADY?!?!?! INSANITY. Just like everyone else, we’ve been pretty busy around here. During Thanksgiving break, my boys were BEGGING to go back to school. They wanted to make pictures for their teachers and couldn’t wait to get back to a routine. Have I mentioned how much we love their teachers?! Because we really, REALLY do!!!! Now, this might be a proud momma moment, but I have to share because I know y’all will appreciate it. Landon…my little Pre-K man…has a … [Read more...] about Math Fun, Grinch Prep, Gingerbread, and I Got My Shop On :)
RACK 2012 & A DIY Advent Calendar
I’ve had several messages asking if I would mind sharing my RACK ideas for this holiday season, so I thought I’d share it here incase anyone else is interested. I surely didn’t invent the idea of Random Acts of Christmas Kindness, but I LOVE it. I found most of my ideas for this year’s activities from the precious blog, Lil Light O’Mine. If you want to read more about RACK’ing, you can check out what we did last year. First up, I knew I wanted an advent calendar to keep myself organized this year, so I headed to Hobby Lobby to find some inspiration. A few tiny little red clothespins and some red & white twine … [Read more...] about RACK 2012 & A DIY Advent Calendar
Vocabulary Craftivity with a Holiday Twist
I was reading a book to my sweeties earlier in the week that had the word “overlapped” in it. One of my littles stopped to ask me what that word meant {I always love it when they stop to ask stuff like that!!!} Anyway, I tried to explain it as best as I could and then continued reading. That little momentary pause for explanation got me thinking about making my vocabulary instruction more hands-on. Now, that wasn’t necessarily a vocabulary word I was trying to teach, but since we discussed it, I figured ‘why not’?! I’m always trying to find meaningful ways to make instruction more hands-on. That night, I took … [Read more...] about Vocabulary Craftivity with a Holiday Twist
Break is Over!
Don’tcha just hate it when your break is finally over?! I could definitely use another week…or three :) But that’s only because I had so much fun spending time with my sweet boys!! They’re a trip! My sweet in-laws came to visit for a few days and it was their first time to see the new house. We loved showing them around our new city and the boys were in absolute HEAVEN. They LOVE having Grandma and Grandpa all to themselves! Thanksgiving was wonderful…as it usually is…and my mom & I rested up on Thursday night so we’d be ready to go on Friday. Yes…Black Friday shopping is an annual event for … [Read more...] about Break is Over!
Thank You.
Just stopping in for a little bit tonight not to share anything, but to say thank you. In light of turkey day tomorrow, I just wanted to stop for a minute to thank God for the blessings He has set before me. One of the biggest, most unexpected blessings is this little blog. Back in 2010, I wanted to share a few ideas and I was on a mad search for lots more. I just started teaching 1st grade and I wanted to peek inside other classrooms to see what everyone else was doing. There were only a handful of blogs at the time, but after about a year, there were TONS more. So many infact that I just couldn’t keep … [Read more...] about Thank You.
More Even & Odd Fun and The Great Turkey Race
We had some more odd & even fun today…just a little follow-up to yesterday’s Odd Todd & Even Steven lesson. I drew a few hands under my document camera {don’t worry…they wiped right off!!} and passed out some number cards to the kids. I called on each of the kids…one at a time…to tell me the number they were holding. We used snap cubes to count them out and then checked to see if we could split them EVENLY between the two hands. If we could, they sorted their number in the "even” column, and if we couldn’t, well…the number went to the “odd” column. They made some GREAT connections to yesterday’s Even … [Read more...] about More Even & Odd Fun and The Great Turkey Race
Odd Todd & Even Steven
So, lately my kids have been making some really great observations about numbers. They’ve been noticing patterns in our hundreds chart and they’re pros at skip counting {by 5’s & 10’s, anyway ;)} I really want to start adding the concept of odd & even numbers to our calendar routine, but before I started with that, I really wanted my babies to understand WHY numbers are odd &/or even. I came across this little book in my math book stash the other day… I got to thinking that it would be pretty awesome for the kids to practice making even and odd numbers with…my personal favorite….FOOD! Shocker, I know … [Read more...] about Odd Todd & Even Steven
Writing to Inform and Veteran’s Day
Now that my boys have made it through the first big sickness of the year, I finally feel like I can catch my breath. Whew…that was a ROUGH couple of weeks!! I really worked hard to make up for lost time with my {school} littles this week…and it was definitely a busy one!!! Since I missed the 50th day of school so I could stay at home to take care of my little sickie, I decided to treat my kids to some 50th day fun on Friday. We did a few activities from my 50th day of school packet and finished our day with some DElicious root beer floats. Can you say 3 servings for the teacher?! After enjoying our … [Read more...] about Writing to Inform and Veteran’s Day
Catching Up & When The Leaf Blew In
I am home from school today…AGAIN…with a sick little man. And I’m missing the 50th day of school…SADSVILLE!!!!! My favorite day of the year!!!! While my kids are at school dressed in their cutie little poodle skirts and saddle shoes, they’ll be celebrating with root beer floats and 50th day fun TOMORROW. I can’t miss out on EVERYTHING ;) One thing is certain…I’m SO ready for my boys to be well again!!!! Between strep throat, ear infections, and breathing treatments…this momma is spent! Moving on… We celebrated “Character Dress Up Day” at school last week. I don’t know if I told y’all this before, … [Read more...] about Catching Up & When The Leaf Blew In
The Littlest Pumpkin
Okay, so I meant to post this earlier this evening, but I’ve been glued to the TV watching the footage from Sandy’s path of destruction! To all my East Coast friends…I’m praying for you!!!! PLEASE be safe!!!!!!! ************************************************************************************************ Just wanted to quickly share a fun little activity we did after reading the book, The Littlest Pumpkin by R.A. Herman. This is one of my favorite seasonal stories! There is SO much you can do with it!!! Going Batty
This week we’re goin’ batty in the classroom! In all fairness, we’re goin’ batty over spiders, too :) We started out the week reading fiction and non-fiction books about bats. After seeing a few illustrations and real pictures of bats, I was dying to know what my kids thought…do you think they’re cute?? or creepy?? I’ve seen one up close & in person and ohmiword…I hope I never see one again. My vote…CREEPY. Here’s what the kids thought… Can y’all believe that?! Most of my little sweeties thought they were cute!!!! We took this time to review the differences between picture … [Read more...] about Going Batty
I Know A Fruit That Grows on Trees
Have I mentioned that I have a serious obsession with apples?? I don’t know if you agree with me, but apples always taste better this time of year. I have a board FULL of apple{ish} recipes I pinned and I’m going to *try* to make {at least} half of them. I’ll also be shopping for a new {larger} wardrobe in the process ;) Even though we’re still rockin’ the 80-90 degree temps down here in the south, I’m definitely feeling the Fall weather in my heart ;) My absolute most FAVORITE apple has got to be the {ridiculously expensive} honey crisp. I could eat one every.single.day {if I didn’t think I’d go into … [Read more...] about I Know A Fruit That Grows on Trees
Labeling the Teacher & Some Syllable Fun
Last year I saw the cutest labeling lesson from sweet Julie Lee. I had already introduced the concept when I saw it, so I tucked away the idea and knew I’d use it in the future. I pulled it out today and the kids had a BLAST! We’ve seen lots of labels in our guided readers, print, and around the classroom, so the kids are used to hearing the word. Today we actually put a little meaning behind it. I created this little chart with pre-labeled stickies. When I introduced it, I told the kids that we were going to have a special visitor that didn’t know ANYTHING about people, but he knew how to read. … [Read more...] about Labeling the Teacher & Some Syllable Fun
What We’ve Been Up To…
Okay, so what HAVEN’T we been up to?! We stay pretty busy in Kindergarten! So much so that I haven’t been very good about remembering to take any pictures! Boo for me! However, I haven’t forgotten how to write with lots of exclamations!!! ;) A few weeks ago, I saw a DARLING idea on Pencils, Glue, & Tying Shoes {don’tcha just LOVE that name?!?!?} for teaching the 5 senses. I absolutely LOVED her anchor chart, so I wanted to introduce our little unit of study with something pretty similar. Meet Five Senses Frank. It always cracks me up when the kids say they have a sense of “eyes” … [Read more...] about What We’ve Been Up To…
Christmas in September?!?!
I think y’all have heard me say it before, but just incase you haven’t, I LOVE Christmas. Sure, I love it for all the traditions & *fun stuff*, but I absolutely LOVE the true meaning behind it the most. While I LOVE our yearly visits from Santa, I want my boys to understand WHY we celebrate. One of our favorite Christmas traditions is waking up on Christmas morning and eating birthday cake for breakfast right after we sing “Happy Birthday!” to Jesus. A few years ago, we started my MOST favorite tradition…our nightly, family Christmas devotional. My boys LOVE it!!! Here’s how it works… A Meaningful … [Read more...] about Christmas in September?!?!
You’re Knockin’ My Socks Off!
In any given (school) day, my kids probably hear my say, “You’re knockin’ my socks off!” no less than 25+ times :) I usually say this when somebody has a bright idea that really blows me away, but more often you’re likely to hear me utter this phrase when I see kids that are on task and working responsibly. At the beginning of the year, it can be challenging to get Kindergarteners to realize they can do *hard* things, so lots of praise and positive reinforcement are a must…for me, anyway. To keep my kids on track and encouraged to do their best, I decided I needed a visual to go with my whole, “You’re knockin’ my socks … [Read more...] about You’re Knockin’ My Socks Off!
Say My Name & Some Math Fun
Happy Tuesday! It was a WHRLWIND weekend here for my little family. Remember my precious *little* sister?!?! Well…she tied the knot on Saturday and it was AMAZING!!! But seriously….talk about NO sleep! Isn’t she lovely?! And look at my cute lil’ momma! I love these ladies!! And look at my sweet boys! Cutest little “banner bearers” I ever did see!!! I was the matron of honor and I *sang* my speech. People…I DO NOT sing. Not even a little. In Abby’s words, I’m *12 kinds* of tone def!!! But I had to make it memorable. I love my sister and wanted to shock the … [Read more...] about Say My Name & Some Math Fun
