Ahhh. It's October. This time of the year lends itself to SO many themes we can use to teach different skills and concepts. Candy, the skeletal system, pumpkins, and Fall. And SO many more! Two of my most favorite thematic units of study this time of the year are bats and spiders. I typically start the month of October using these two themes the first couple of weeks. Today I wanted to take a minute to share with you what the first couple of weeks of October might look like in my classroom. Today we'll start with bats! Tune-in tomorrow for Spider Week activities and ideas! I always start out bat week using a schema … [Read more...] about Bat Week
See what I did there?! In all seriousness, happy Tuesday!! Did y'all have the day off yesterday?! We did. All 3 of my boys had a "man day". That basically consisted of a lot of bathroom jokes, lunch out at Chili's, and a trip to Home Depot. I spent the day putting the finishing touches on my presentations for next week's Tennessee First Grade Conference. Will I see you there?! I sure hope so! If y'all haven't learned about bats yet, or even if you have, I just wanted to share a few things we've done in years past and give you guys a few more freebies to add to your ever growing collection of … [Read more...] about It’s Tuesday & I’m a Little Batty
Do you ever feel like the short weeks are always the longest?! Why is that?! Maybe because we were blessed with a full moon. It’s a thought :) We were off for Columbus Day last Monday and then we turned right around on Wednesday and left campus for our first field trip of the school year. We went to see a live performance of “The Cat in the Hat” at the theater and then headed to the city park for lunch and a little playtime. I was so excited to be both mom AND teacher for this field trip. My little nugget’s class was there, too! SO exciting :) Since we only had 3 full days in the classroom, … [Read more...] about Last Week. And My Visual Plans.
This week we’re goin’ batty in the classroom! In all fairness, we’re goin’ batty over spiders, too :) We started out the week reading fiction and non-fiction books about bats. After seeing a few illustrations and real pictures of bats, I was dying to know what my kids thought…do you think they’re cute?? or creepy?? I’ve seen one up close & in person and ohmiword…I hope I never see one again. My vote…CREEPY. Here’s what the kids thought… Can y’all believe that?! Most of my little sweeties thought they were cute!!!! We took this time to review the differences between picture … [Read more...] about Going Batty
We had SO much fun learning about bats last week! My kids are really into non-fiction this year and LOVE “fact gathering”. Kinda precious if you ask me ;) At the beginning of the week, we read Stellaluna & followed up the story with a Bats vs. Birds Venn Diagram and a story map. My kids are really into story maps this year, too! And I love having a visual to organize our thoughts. Since there were a lot of little problems and characters in Stellaluna, this was the perfect time to talk about main character & main problem. We starred those on the story map to remember the difference! I also had the kids make their own … [Read more...] about Stellaluna Fun!
