Oh, my heart. To Sir, With Love, by Lauren Layne, was such a lighthearted and charming read! A precious palate cleanser that made my rom com loving heart swell with happiness. As the author noted, this story is a modern day retelling of You’ve Got Mail, so if you’re a fan of that movie (which I adore!), you’ll definitely want to read this STAT!
Gracie Cooper is a romantic at heart. Perpetually happy and optimistic, she looks for love on a blind dating app and is met with a friendship instead. Witty banter ensues between Gracie and her “sir”….could she really be falling in love with someone she’s never met (did I mention he’s unavailable as well!?)
Enter a chance encounter with Sebastian Andrews. Devilishly handsome and charming…could it be love at first sight? Possibly so…until Sebastian becomes her rival. Gracie is running her late father’s champagne shop and determined to keep it afloat amidst abysmal sales, but Sebastian’s company wants to buy her out. And even though he drives her absolutely mad, she thinks she might be falling for Sebastian, too. Is it possible to be in love with two different men at the same time? But what if they’re actually the same person?
There were definitely parts of the story that could’ve been more fleshed out, but overall this was such a lighthearted, sweet read. It all worked for me. It was everything I want a good rom com to be…endearing, witty, sweet, somewhat unrealistic, a little cheesy, and fun. Yep…this one checked all those boxes for me. While nothing can ever truly compare to a Meg Ryan + Tom Hanks classic, this one came pretty close.
As far as rom coms go, this one’s a 5 out of 5 stars for me.
