If you’re looking for a domestic suspense novel, this might be right up your alley. The Night She Went Missing, by Kristen Bird, really intrigued me. And while parts of this novel were a little hit & miss, overall it was an enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of Big Little Lies, this one was written in a similar style.
The story starts of pretty strong when Emily, a senior in high school at a prestigious private school, goes missing. She’s out at a party with her friends one night and is nowhere to be found the next morning nor weeks after. The story is told from multiple POVs where we learn character secrets and lies….lots of domestic drama! Where is Emily? What happened at the party? Who can we trust?
The second half of the book wasn’t nearly as strong as the first. I felt like there were a lot of unnecessary interactions and dialogue that didn’t really contribute to the overall vibe of the story. Lots of questionable, almost unrealistic, decisions made that had me asking, “but WHY?” aloud to no one but myself. Although it wasn’t a totally seamless story, I kept reading to find out how it would all play out. I wasn’t totally disappointed, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled either. I’d definitely say it was enjoyable, just fell flat in certain places where it could’ve really been something great.
On a random note, I really appreciated that the story takes place in Galveston, TX. We live about an hour from the island and visit often. I always love when I’m reading a book and the places in the story intersect with my real life. Loved the relativity there!!
Gave this one a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
