In theory, Single & Ready to Jingle by Piper Rayne should be the cutest little holiday read ever to hit the shelves, but this one didn’t check all the boxes for me. A fun & festive read, but after the last two I felt like this one paled in comparison.
Kenzie loves Christmas. Andrew is the Grinch. The two go out on a blind date and their meet cute is anything but charming. They leave the date on a sour note, but Kenzie isn’t finished with Andrew just yet…and if she has anything to do with it, Andrew will be in the holiday spirit in no time.
So let me just start by saying that I think I would’ve enjoyed this one more if I had read the physical copy. I had a long workday alone and listened to this one on Audible. I think the audiobook version may have tainted my experience.
What I liked about this book: grump/sunshine trope, dual first person POV, NYC setting, and all the holiday magic. Definitely a fun and festive read with some sweet romance thrown in the mix.
What didn’t work for me: Kenzie was a little too over-the-top sunshine for me and Andrew was just plain Scrooge. I love a grump/sunshine trope, but these two just didn’t feel like they fit. Again, I honestly think it was the narration more than the characters themselves. Also, this was a slooooow burn. And maybe that’s why the audiobook didn’t work for me.
Overall this was a cute story, but I wish I would’ve picked up a physical copy instead of listening on audiobook. I adore the premise and it was definitely a festive read. I think I’ll try again next holiday season while I’m cozied up under a blanket, book in one hand and eggnog in the other.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
