Our anchor letter this week is the letter ‘A’. We don’t teach a letter a week, but we do have a phonics program we follow that focuses on one letter each week. We spend our small group time and shared reading/writing instruction to focus on and teach the alphabet. {I personally like to introduce the letters in McCracken order during small group because that’s how I was taught to do it my very first year teaching! Some habits die hard! But hey…the letters are being covered on all ends possible!!! HA!} Anyway since A is our anchor letter this week, I introduced the vowels…after all, that’s a pretty important characteristic of the letter! I knew I had to make sure I made the introduction catchy….these are 5-year-olds after all!! So…a sweet little ditty to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell came to mind and now we can’t get it out of our heads 🙂 Just thought I’d share incase your kids like to sing, too! 🙂

Cute! We do Old McDonald had a vowel, a-e-i-o-u. And then we sign the sounds the vowels make as we learn them.

I like this too! We sing "Which 5 letters are the vowels? A-E-I-O-U" to the tune of Old McDonald. I sing the first part and the kids echo me! We sometimes continue with…"with an /a/, /a/ here….through all the vowel sounds. We also play a cute little game to go along with it. It's SO SIMPLE and the kids love it! Everyone gets in a circle and we go around the circle saying A-E-I-O-U sit down. Whoever lands on U-sit down sits down. We continue around again and again until 1 person is left. They stand in the middle pointing the next time:)
Love this and my kids will too! I'm curious. . What phonics program do y'all use? I'd like to know some other programs out there that have been successful.
Okay, so am I the only one who has to sing the tune & then gradually change the words…I swear it's like remedial music up in my living room!!
