I kept seeing a lot of buzz about The Very Secret Society of Irregular Withces, by Sangu Mandanna and since I just decorated for Halloween, I figured it was the perfect time to get me into the spirit of spooky season.
In this book, Mika is one of the few (very secret) witches in Britain. She keeps her powers hidden and stays far from other witches so as not to draw attention to herself and her powers. Orphaned as a young child and raised by strangers, Mika knows what it’s like to feel alone. When she’s invited to help teach three young witches how to harness their powers, Mika starts to learn what it feels like to belong and find love in more ways than one.
To be completely transparent, I’ve never really gravitated toward witchy reads. Not really sure why, but I just didn’t ever think they’d be for me. Now I can’t speak for all the witchy books out there, but The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was like a big, warm hug. Why have I shied away from these far-fetched tales?! It was so charming and downright cute. Unconventional and so very out there, but oh my word adorable.
This one was giving Practical Magic vibes and I found myself lost in between it’s pages. It was eccentric and fun in all the best ways possible. Lots of magic, tons of heart. Almost read as a YA novel, but the romance factor paired with the spice (hello!) makes it a perfect book for adults (lots of colorful language, too, lol). I loved the quirky characters and their backstories…especially the diversity represented among the different people!
Overall, a happy, magical, feel good kind of story. And if you love the found family trope, you can’t go wrong. If you’re looking for a book to devour during Halloween season that’s void of horror and gore and heavy on heart, pick this one up asap! It definitely cast a spell on me 🙂
