I’ve been on a bit of a reading kick with a foodie theme this month, so it seemed fitting to continue the trend with The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie, by Rachel Linden.
The book blurb sums this one up perfectly…”An uplifting novel about a heartbroken young pie maker who is granted a magical second chance to live the life she didn’t choose“. Swoon.
Oh my word how I ADORED this book. One of my favorite comfort reads this year. Right off the bat, you need to know that I LOVE magical realism. It’s one of my favorite genres, especially when done well. And this one is definitely that. One Italian Summer meets This Time Tomorrow meets The Midnight Library meets Sliding Doors. A story about lost love and second chances. I loved every second.
Lolly (the main character) was so lovable and the supporting cast was just as charming. She’s full of regrets and living a life she didn’t anticipate, but she’s given the chance to live three days of the lives that might have been thanks to her Aunt Gert’s magical lemon drops. I loved the way Lolly held onto pieces of those magical days and used her experiences to make her present life better.
Heartwarming and uplifting, The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie is full of hope, heartache, and solid life wisdom. Learning to let go of the past to embrace what the future holds, as unpredictable as that might be. I absolutely LOVED the way the story unfolded. And while I figured out how the story would end long before the last page, I was so incredibly happy with how it all turned out. It would’ve wrecked me had it ended any other way. Such a tender, heartfelt story.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves magical realism and time travel as well as a lost love/second chance at love trope. Full of magic, hope, and sweetness. This one tugged at my heartstrings and had me reaching for the tissues by the time it was all said and done. A story that’s sure to stay with me for a long time. A big, giant, enchanting hug.
4.8 out of 5 stars.
