💫 As a mom of two boys, I’m often asked if I ever wanted a girl. “Don’t you wish you would’ve tried again?!” As though my first two successful attempts at babymaking weren’t quite enough? As if somehow I could possibly disappointed that I’m raising “just boys”. Because it’s unfathomable to think that I could truly be content in the absence of baby dolls and ballet recitals?

My answer is always the same. No. And not that I wouldn’t have been happy to raise a daughter, but I’ve never felt like I’m missing out. These boys are more than I ever could have dreamed of and everything I don’t deserve💙

Being a boy mom has challenged me in ways I never anticipated and grown me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I can identify a foul smell from a mile away and know how to get grass & mud stains out of the brightest whites. I recognize potty humor as a natural cadence of their language and laugh maniacally at all (well, most) of their gross jokes (I guess I’ve realized I’m a little gross, too). I’ve grown accustomed to the constant hum of bouncing balls & can tell you a few things about Minecraft & Fortnite, too (although my skills are pretty rusty). I can usually manage to stay eerily calm when something breaks (it’s usually replaceable) & know how to bandage & care for a variety of cuts, scrapes, & bruises.

The greatest joy of being the mom of “just boys” is watching how incredibly BIG they love. They love me the best when I’m at my absolute worst. No matter how many times I disappoint them, they lavish me with infinite forgiveness. They’re eager to lend a hand & generous with their time. They’re slow to walk away from conversation, never shy away from affection, & rarely miss an opportunity to surprise me with a compliment. How lucky I am to get a front row seat to every tear shed from both happiness & heartache.

It’s hard to miss something you never had…especially when you’re so in love with what you’ve got. And I couldn’t be more grateful that I’ve been given these two. Happy National Son’s Day, boys. Thanks for making me a mom.

Our little business turned 3 today and what a whir

When I was just a wee little thing, I spent my day

When I was just a wee little thing, I spent my days smelling like Baby Magic & powder (& a little dirt, too).

My junior & senior years in high school enticed me to flirt with scents decidedly more mature (obvi) so I graduated to perfumes like Tommy Girl, Ralph, and Romance.

My college years found me too strapped for cash to even afford a Bath & Body Words body spray, but you’d better believe I found it in the budget to smell like Cucumber Melon all day every day.

Upon graduation, I traded in my body spray for the smell of seafood which came from 6 full months of working double shifts at Joe’s Crab Shack.

After being thrust into my very own Kindergarten classroom, I slowly accumulated a fragrance collection curated by 5 & 6 year olds (mostly in the form of ‘hanitizer’ and juice pouches) & eventually traded those in to rock the baby formula & Desitin scents when the boys were born.

In my current adult life, I finally have a go-to scent (Tocca Florence) & a cast of body mists, sprays, & deodorants I don’t leave home without because heaven forbid I get caught smelling anything less than fresh (especially in this Texas heat).

But the smell I love the most of all…the one I miss more than I care to admit…is the occasional whiff of spit-up & baby/toddler slobber. I wore those for a good 4-5 years as my signature scent. A fragrant reminder of how much I was needed by two little humans who needed me most.

I was their go-to person for everything & as tiring as it was & as much as I kept wishing the next phase would get here faster, I miss it. Yep...even the sour stains of formula & soiled onesies. Because now those two little boys are a lot bigger & the fragrance of their dependence has faded.

So instead of wearing a little bit of their childhood on my tees & in my hair & wishing the next phase would “hurry up”, I’m delighting in the nostalgia of those familiar smells & praying Father Time would be gentle on this sentimental heart of mine.

Time is a dirty, but delightfully smelling, thief isn’t it?!?!
