If you grew up in the 80’s like me, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, by Grady Hendrix needs to be on your TBR list! The nostalgia was strong with this one and the story was surprisingly good as well. This one was recommended to me by a friend who recently finished her copy and while I was really reluctant to read it at first, I’m so glad I did!
In short, this story is about two girls, Abby & Gretchen, and the demonic possession that almost ended their friendship. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking, “no thanks!!!” which is exactly how I felt, too! But man, it was a compulsive read! Maybe it’s because I loved all the 80’s references and the nods to the pop culture of the times or how it read like a cheesy 80’s horror flick (weren’t those the best?!?!?)
I didn’t particularly think this was scary in the least. More dark humor than horror, but definitely giving campy 80’s horror vibes. An atypical coming of age story that takes place during the satanic panic wave of the era. There were so many laugh out loud moments and some that were equally cringe. And because the story takes place in the 80’s, you can expect some controversial & offensive subject matter and language that wouldn’t go down if it were written in present time (but definitely reflective of that era, ugh).
Yes, there is an exorcism that takes place as the title suggests, and I would say that was the only part of the story I didn’t really care for, but there was the perfect amount of humor written into this scene that balanced it out pretty well. And while an exorcism sounds pretty horrific, that part genuinely pales in comparison to the sweetness of the friendship between Abby & Gretchen. I really loved the way Hendrix captured their bond…incredibly palpable and realistic.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism won’t appeal to everyone’s palate, but it was perfect for mine. If you appreciate the 80’s at all and enjoy unbelievable, cheesy “horror” flicks, this book will be right up your alley. Seriously such a fun read. So surprisingly entertaining and well done!
