22 years in and I’m definitely no expert on marriage, but I love the life we’ve created. If you ask me what’s made our marriage what it is, here’s the advice I’d share….

❤️God first - when we started putting Him first in everything we did, everything else sort of fell into place and our marriage truly changed for the better

❤️Prioritize your relationship - one day the kids will be gone and you won’t want to live with a stranger. Spend time alone like you did before you had a family - date nights, trips without the kids…any way you can be alone just the two of you ❤️ Not only does alone time strengthen your relationship, but it always leads to better communication, more intimacy, and the kind of fun you had when you first started dating.

❤️Communication is key - it’s easy to get mad when your expectations aren’t being met, but if you aren’t communicating those needs/wants in the first place, you’ll always be frustrated. It’s impossible to fix something when you don’t know it’s broken.

❤️Never stop dating (or flirting) - intimacy matters and truly makes a difference. Who doesn’t love the feeling of being loved and feeling wanted?!

❤️Be teammates, not scorekeepers - keeping track of each other’s shortcomings just leads to resentment and bitterness. The sooner you realize you BOTH fall short (and always will), the easier it is to give grace.

❤️Agree to share responsibility - first realize that marriage isn’t usually 50/50. Sometimes it’s 70/30, or 90/10, or 80/20. When I’m operating at 30, he picks up the other 70. When he’s operating at 40, I’m picking up the other 60. It’s not always equal, but it most often evens out in the long run.

❤️Laugh together - life’s too short to be so serious all the time. There’s nothing better than having fun with your best friend 🫶🏻

22 years later and I’d still choose to marry him all over again. ❤️
