Want a book that will stay with you long after you’re finished reading?! Pick up a copy of The Grace Year by Kim Liggett and prepare to have ALL the feels. A mash-up of The Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies & The Handmaid’s Tale
The Grace Year is a feminist dystopian fiction about the girls of Garner County who are believed to emit a powerful magic that drives men absolutely wild. These girls are gathered together when they turn 16 and banished from their homes. They’re sent to live on an isolated compound for a year (the grace year) to expel their magic and come back purified and ready for marriage. The only caveat is that they actually have to SURVIVE the year. Between the poachers in the woods and the sabotage and betrayal amongst the girls, the grace year is often a fatal one.
This was a nightmarishly great read…so easy to get lost in the pages. There were parts that seemed to drag on where they didn’t need to and the love story within was told a little sloppily…almost unconvincing. The Grace Year was equal parts infuriating, terrifying, smart, and hopeful. Hard to put down once I started!
4 out of 5 stars for me!
I think you’ll really enjoy this one especially if you’re a fan of The Handmaid’s Tale or The Hunger Games.
